CANCELLED: This event has been cancelled, due to the closure of the MET Opera House at out of concerns about the spread of COVID-19. At this time, we do not have plans to reschedule, but we look forward to welcoming you for future opera events at such a time when they are again possible.

Friends of Freiburg Board Member Sarah Stephens will offer her next opera introduction before the evening performance of Wagner’s Der fliegende Höllander (The Flying Dutchman). This exciting new production, staged by director François Girard, will be premiered at the Met in the spring of 2020 with the renowned bass-baritone Sir Bryn Terfel who is returning to the stage to sing the title role. This epic 19th century work of the cursed sea captain who restlessly sails the seas to eternity seeking true love for redemption is an excellent introductory opera for those not familiar with Wagner. German soprano Anja Kampe will make her Met debut as Senta, bass Franz-Josef Selig is her father, Daland, and the great Russian Valery Gergiev conducts.

Each performance is preceded by Alumna and Board Member Sarah Stephens’ introduction in her lovely UWS Ansonia apartment with hors d’oeuvres and prosecco. Whether you are new to opera or a long-time opera fan, you are sure to enjoy and appreciate the performance more after Sarah’s introduction. We are able to offer 20% reduced rate tickets. There’s $15 per person charge to cover hors d’oeuvres and prosecco. At this event, we will also be joined by our friends from the UA Ruhr.

Space is limited so please sign up early by RSVP-ing directly to alumni.fr.northamerica@gmail.com with the number and type of tickets you would like to reserve. We are pleased to offer:
