Threats of a New Cold War? Challenges and Choices for Germany and the Transatlantic Alliance
The tensions along the Ukranian border have been rising with the steady increase of Russian troops positioned for a potential attack. Diplomatic efforts to defuse the situation are uncertain to be successful. Germany’s role is pivotal in the effort to avoid military conflicts and as a leader in the transatlantic alliance. We will discuss how Germany is facing challenges and choices in a global arena of dangerous conflicts. We are pleased to welcome Bastian Hermisson, Executive Director of the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung (Washington, D.C. Office) and Sophie Arts, Senior Program Coordinator for Security and Defense Policy at the German Marshall Fund, in conversation with Dr. Jackson Janes.

Bastian Hermisson has been executive director of the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung’s Washington, DC office since 2015. Prior to that, he directed the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung’s European Union office in Brussels, and was head of the EU/North America department as well as the department for foreign and security policy of the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung’s headquarters in Berlin. Previously he directed the program for transatlantic relations at the foundation’s office in Washington, DC. Before joining the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung, Bastian served for three years as advisor on foreign, security and environmental politics to MP Katrin Göring-Eckardt, caucus leader of the Greens in the German Bundestag. He holds an M. A. summa cum laude in cultural anthropology and geography, having studied at the Humboldt-University as well as the Free University, Berlin, the Albert-Ludwigs-University, Freiburg, and Connecticut College, New London, CT.
Sophie Arts is the senior program coordinator for security and defense policy (SDP) at The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) in Washington, DC. Her work focuses on transatlantic security cooperation within and outside of NATO. Originally from Germany, she holds a master’s degree in American studies from Humboldt University in Berlin and a bachelor’s degree in English and modern history from the University of Freiburg. Prior to joining GMF’s Washington office in 2017, Sophie held different research positions at the Atlantic Council, GMF’s Brussels Office, and the University of Virginia and worked as a freelance journalist for Kantar Media Deutschland and Spiegel Online International.
