DATE CHANGE! Alumni Freiburg Virtual Opera Talk – Philip Glass’s Akhnaten
The Metropolitan Opera has made an important scheduling change for the Nightly Streamed HD performances to honor Juneteeth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States dating back to 1865. In its place, Verdi’s La Forza del Destino with the legendary Leontyne Price will be streamed. Sarah has agreed to give her Opera Talk on Philip Glass’s Akhnaten on Saturday, June 20, instead. Below is the updated information. We hope you will be able to join us on Saturday!

Saturday, June 20 – Opera Talk at 6:00pm EDT – Opera stream available at 7:30 PM EDT
Friends of Freiburg board member and international opera manager Sarah Stephens will offer her next virtual “Alumni Freiburg Opera Talk” for the Metropolitan Opera’s sensational 2019 production of Philip Glass’s Akhnaten. The HD Akhnaten performance will be streamed for free immediately following her talk. Director Phelim McDermott tackles another one of Philip Glass’s modern masterpieces, with star countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo as the revolutionary title ruler who transformed ancient Egypt. To match the opera’s hypnotic, ritualistic music, McDermott offers an arresting vision that includes a virtuosic company of acrobats and jugglers.

6:00pm – 7:15pm – Sarah’s opera introduction
7:30pm – Metropolitan Opera Nightly Stream: Glass’s Akhnaten

Please join us with a bowl of popcorn and a glass of wine for Sarah’s opera introduction that will enhance your understanding and enjoyment of the opera. It concludes with the Nightly Streamed HD performance from the Metropolitan Opera.
