Friends of Freiburg is pleased to announce that we will be holding a unique kind of Weinprobe. Working together with Alixe Winter, Geschäftsführerin of the Alte Wache, Haus der badischen Weine, renowned wine expert William Goldberg (WSET3), and wine importer Jan Schuler of Wünderwein, we are going to compare the Burgunder wines (Grauburgunder, Weißburgunder and Spätburgunder) from Baden with the same varieties from the Willamette Valley in Oregon, where the same grapes might be better known as the “Pinot Trio” of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc.

I’m sure you have missed wines from Baden in North America as they are almost impossible to come by.  But the indefatigable Marta Millar and Uni-Freiburg Alumnus William Goldberg have unearthed a supply in the form of Jan Schuler and his company Wünderwein.  They have agreed to provide a bespoke trio of wines from Weingut Salwey in the Kaiserstuhl. If you order the full trio of the Salwey wines, you pay for the wine only: shipping charges are waived.

On this continent, Herr Goldberg is recommending a “Pinot Trio” from King Estates in the Willamette Valley.  These wines are readily available in most major wine stores such as Total Wine but you should feel free to buy these grape varieties from other vineyards in Oregon’s Willamette Valley should you not readily find the wines from King Estates.

During the Weinprobe, Alixe Winter will talk about the uniqueness of wines from Baden and the folks at Weingut Salwey will talk about the wines from their own vineyard, their wine-making philosophy, and more. Herr Goldberg will hold forth on the terroir of the Willamette Valley and the particularities of the wines from King Estates.

In the run up to the Weinprobe, we have created a Slack channel, a kind of online forum where we will include information about the history and personality of the wines from the two regions along with pairing suggestions and more.  We will also invite you, the participants, to drink some of these wines in advance of the Weinprobe and share your experiences and impressions on the Slack channel.

The cost to take part is up to you.  You can buy some or all of the wines mentioned; you can also just join us and listen in.The suggested selection and estimated pricing for the wines can be found below. Please register in advance for this event. Once you have registered for the Zoom event, you will receive additional information about purchasing the wines and accessing the Slack channel.

We look forward to a wonderful evening of wine and reminiscing!

German Wines – Salwey Estate:
Atop the sun-soaked hills of Baden’s Kaiserstuhl, in the village of Oberrotweil is the proud Salwey estate. Family winemaking roots in this spot reach deep and far all the way back to the 18th century. Benno Salwey founded the present-day winery amidst the rich volcanic soils of the locale in 1950. It was taken over by son Wolf-Dietrich in 1985. A truly family affair, in turn, his son Konrad took the reins in 2011. Salwey’s wine production is anchored in the classic Kaiserstuhl varietals – the three Burgunders: Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder, and Spätburgunder. Renowned for his innovation, Konrad is committed to new vinification styles with the most refined wine possible always the aim. He is particularly passionate about Grauburgunder which has become Salwey’s calling card.

Salwey Spätburgunder Kasleberg 2014 – $27.95
A fruity and medium bodied Pinot Noir for every day. This Estate Wine is an unintrusive but classic Spätburgunder adding value to light meat dishes and / or bread and cheese.

Salwey  Weißburgunder 2018 – $21.95
Clear fruit aromas, medium volume and pleasant acid characterize Pinot Blanc. It is absolutely typical of the variety, not scented and something like “everybodies darling” from our wine collection. It gives pleasure to discerning palates as well as connoisseurs and is therefore ideal as a “wine by the glass” or at banquets

Salwey, Grauburgunder Gutswein 2018– $21.95
Grauburgunder Gutswein is Salwey’s flagship. A typical, robust representative of this demanding variety. Especially with Pinot Gris, it is important to pay attention to the right time to read in order to achieve freshness and lightness, in the Salwey style. Thanks to its low residual sugar and tannin structure, Pinot Gris is versatile as a meal companion and is therefore an ideal table wine.

American Wines – King Estate:
When King Estate was founded in 1991, it was driven by a commitment to sustainability and profound respect for the land. The adventurous spirit that inspired us from the beginning continues to guide us as we nurture our vineyards to craft premium Oregon wines. The King Estate story is woven into the history of Oregon wine, where winemaking is synonymous with discovery and sustainability. The last 30 years have been focused on innovation, craft, and a deep sense of respect for the land, the vines and the people who enjoy our wines. We have been establishing our traditions, one vintage at a time. Today we continue to build a legacy with sustainable agricultural and winemaking practices, resulting in our collection of fine wines. Our deep-rooted philosophy led to King Estate becoming the largest certified Biodynamic vineyard in North America. It’s more than a trend to us — it’s a way of life.

2017 King Estate Steiner Block Pinot Gris  – $28
Stone fruit notes of peach and apricot are joined by lime, white rose and brioche. Aging in the concrete egg tank imparts a full mouthfeel and enhanced minerality. A round, soft entrance is balanced with acidity to create a long, full finish. View here.

2017 King Estate Willamette Valley Pinot Noir – $30
This 2017 Pinot Noir has a deep garnet color with bright red edges. The nose is expressive with fruit forward notes of ripe strawberry, Bing cherry and black tea, framed by subtle aromas of cigar box and toasted vanilla. The flavors tend toward the red fruit spectrum, with raspberry and ripe strawberry leading the way. There are sweet oak flavors from the barrel aging along with gentle vanilla tinges. Enjoy now through 2037. View here.

2017 King Estate Foris Pinot Blanc – $24
The nose is floral with notes of white peach, nutmeg, sage and vanilla. On the palate, the peach and vanilla flavors continue along with citrus, brioche, apple and sweet oak. The wine is rich and round up front, with good integration of oak tannin and acidity leading to a lingering finish. View here.
